BotoxBOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the only approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet lines in adults. BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries. It has a record of experience that aesthetic providers know and trust. Today, BOTOX® Cosmetic is the #1 selling product of its kind in the world.

What is the history of Botox®?

Botox® Cosmetic received FDA-approval approximately twelve years ago which is 25 years after the original Botox® approval for various medical and therapeutic uses.  It is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world with a long history of clinical studies and safety data.  It has been used in millions of patients worldwide and continues to receive various FDA-approvals across many disease states.  When Botox® Cosmetic is used for cosmetic purposes to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it takes much smaller doses than is used typically for medical purposes.

What does it mean to have an “11″?

The “11″ refers to the set of lines between your eyebrows that make you appear older, angry, sad or tired. Botox® Cosmetic temporarily reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles between the brows and the crow’s feet around the eyes.  A few tiny injections of Botox® Cosmetic relaxes the muscles that cause the wrinkles leaving you looking refreshed, rejuvenated and natural yet still able to make your normal facial expressions.

How does Botox® work?

Botox® Cosmetic is a sterile, natural, purified protein that is given at very low doses to restore a more youthful, rested appearance.  Botox® Cosmetic is administered in “units” and minimizes the communication to these active facial muscles by blocking the impulses to contract leaving them more relaxed.  The most common areas we treat are the muscles between the brows, the crow’s feet and the muscles in the forehead, although, there are many other areas which can be treated as well.

What can I expect with a Botox® Cosmetic treatment?

Botox® Cosmetic is typically a quick, 10 minute procedure performed in the office with no anesthesia required. Injections are administered with a very tiny needle directly into the muscles you want to affect. There is mild discomfort, and, if you’re like most patients, you’ll return directly to work or to your normal daily activities immediately. Many people are very surprised to see just how quickly and comfortably Botox® Cosmetic is injected. The effects of Botox® Cosmetic treatments appear within a week or so and typically last about 4 months.

Beyond the Frown Lines

As mentioned above, there are other areas in which Botox® Cosmetic may be used as well.  Do you have those crinkly bunny lines on your nose?   We can relax those muscles to soften their appearance as well. There are newer Botox Cosmetic techniques that are very popular which include a chemical “brow lift” or brow balance that can be achieved with a specific technique of injections  Other newer techniques include relaxing the downward pull on the corners of the mouth, relaxing the vertical lines above the lips (smoker’s lines) and softening a dimpled chin.  While the results are dramatic, your appearance will not be drastically changed. You will simply appear rested as if you have just returned from a relaxing vacation.  Everyone will notice but no one will know!

Nobody wants a “Frozen Face”

Just to clarify, the “Frozen Face” phenomenon is a term coined in Hollywood.  Botox® Cosmetic does NOT work by freezing facial muscles.  Many Hollywood actors and actresses have requested that their injectors  inject them in a manner that leaves them with no muscle movement at all, hence, the “frozen face” term was born.   Dr Boyse’s philosophy is to produce a natural result bringing out your own innate beauty.  She believes in taking a conservative approach so your face appears more youthful and smooth but you retain your own natural ability to make facial expressions.

Can Botox® Cosmetic be used with dermal fillers?

Yes, absolutely!  Botox® Cosmetic works on different types of wrinkles than dermal fillers do.  While Botox® Cosmetic relaxes the wrinkles caused by making facial expressions, dermal fillers (such as Juvederm® XC Voluma XC, Restylane®, Perlane and Belotero Balance®) fill in and plump areas of the face that are sunken in due to the aging process and loss of volume (wrinkles, creases and folds).  They are very often injected at the same time and used in conjunction for the most dramatic anti-aging effect.  Did you know that by using Botox® Cosmetic along with your wrinkle fillers, you may find that they both last longer?

“I went to a day spa for my first few Botox® injections – not only did my eyes droop for weeks, but my forehead was completely frozen. I could barely smile and it was obvious I had Botox® injections. After swearing off Botox® due to my horrible experience, I met Dr. Boyse who worked with me slowly to introduce me to the correct way to use Botox®. After two appointments, I had never looked so refreshed. My forehead continued to move as usual and my eyes – instead of drooping – looked more vibrant than ever. Thank you for making me so pretty Dr. Boyse!” Gloria B – Chapel Hill, NC
