MOLE & SKIN TAGS

Moles are common; most of us have at least a few. Moles have a raised or flat appearance and contain an increased number of melanocytes (pigmented cells). Adults with light skin are more likely to have moles, however, as many as 40 moles are considered normal. Moles may be present at birth (congenital melanocytic nevi) or may develop during childhood or young adulthood (acquired melanocytic nevi). Moles tend to increase in number during the first two decades of life, and teenagers often have a total of 15-25 moles. Sun exposure can stimulate the body to make more moles.

It is important to emphasize that the vast number of moles, new and old, that appear on our skin are perfectly harmless. However, we want to ensure a problem is not overlooked. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer often develops in or near a mole and can be hard for an untrained eye to detect. The first sign of melanoma is often a change to an existing mole or the development of a new mole. If a mole gets larger, begins itching or bleeding, make an appointment to see a physician right away. Annual screening along with self-exams promote early detection.

SKIN TAGS
Skin tags are noncancerous growths that protrude from the skin. Skin tags are common especially as you age. Pregnant women, genetics and people with diabetes may be more likely to develop skin tags.

Skin tags are often found around the neck or armpits, or in places of friction, such as where skin folds together. While usually harmless, they can become irritated by clothes or jewelry catching on the tag. While there are many “home” remedies to remove a skin tags, having a dermatologist evaluate and remove the skin tag is advised.

HIVES & RASHES

Hives and rashes are a skin reaction that can cause red, itchy welts or spots which usually develop quickly. Often the reaction is prompted by exposure to a certain food, substance or medication.

Angioedema is a similar skin reaction that affects deeper layers of the skin, commonly appearing around the eyes, cheeks or lips. Angioedema and hives can occur separately or concurrently. Severe angioedema can be life-threatening if swelling in the throat and/or tongue blocks your airway.

WARTS

Common warts are skin growths that appear when a virus infects the top layer of the skin. Warts are contagious and can spread by contact. Warts are benign (not cancerous) and can grow on any part of your body; they are usually rough in texture, and skin-colored, (but can be brown or grayish-black). They are persistent and may require more than one treatment modality depending on the type and location. Whether you need medication, cauterization, freezing or laser treatment, our physicians at Southern Dermatology have solutions.

NAIL DISORDERS

Fungal infections cause most nail disorders affecting both toenails and fingernails. Roughly 1 in 10 Americans will develop a nail disorder in their lifetime. Symptoms may vary but typically include nail pain or soreness, thickening, discoloration, brittleness, separation of the nail from the nail bed or a foul smell.

Nail health can be a visual clue about your overall health. Changes in the nail, such as discoloration or thickening, can signal health problems including liver and kidney diseases, heart and lung conditions, anemia and diabetes. Symptoms such as changes in color, shape, and/or thickness, swelling of the skin around the nails, bleeding or discharge, and pain should be examined. Our board-certified dermatologists can diagnose and treat a range of nail problems.

ECZEMA

Atopic dermatitis, also know as eczema, is a widespread skin condition. In fact, one out of every ten people experiences eczema in their lifetime. Dry, itchy skin that may become irritated, swollen, or discolored are early symptoms and can progress, resulting in blisters or sores. You have probably done some research, maybe even tried some home remedies without lasting results. Southern Dermatology has helped people of all ages find a remedy to help relieve irritated skin. It is important to be sure your skin condition is not something more serious or the sign of an underlying condition.

ACNE

Acne is the most common skin problem in the country. It begins most often, in puberty, and affects more than 80 percent of adolescents and adults at some point in their life.

Acne is a result of clogged pores that become pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, cysts or pustules. These blemishes commonly occur on the face but can also appear on other areas of your body such as the back, neck, and scalp. We know how acne can impact your skin, but we also know it can impact your self-confidence. Our board-certified dermatologists are able to provide accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment to help your ance improve quickly. To determine the best course of treatment, we will assess your skin condition, consider the number and type of lesions, the amount and area of skin involved, as well as your age, overall health, and medical history.

Our dermatologists offer a wide array of options depending on your skin condition and will create a treatment plan specifically for you. Choices may include prescription-strength topical and/or oral medications, antibiotics, hormone therapy, light therapy/ laser treatment, medicinal acne facials or chemical peels. Our goals are to heal existing blemishes, stop new breakouts and prevent scarring.

Pediatric acne can seem especially worrisome for new parents. While pediatric acne is common, we understand that you want to be sure all is well with your baby's delicate skin. Acne can develop at about two-to-four weeks of age. By four-to-six months, most infants acne will clear, without treatment. If you find your baby's skin is getting worse or you feel concerned, call us at (919) 782-2152.

ROSACEA

When it comes to treating rosacea, you have options. This chronic condition affects an estimated 16 million Americans. There are four different types of rosacea and a person can have more than one type. Our board-certified dermatologists will diagnose the type of rosacea you have and treat it accordingly - left untreated, rosacea can become more severe.

Treatment options may include oral medication, topical creams and or laser therapy. Southern Dermatology offers state-of-the-art lasers for patients who could respond well to laser treatments. While medication or laser treatment can reduce or clear the signs of Rosacea, we can work together to identify possible triggers that cause it to flare.

HAIR LOSS

While nearly 80 million people in the United States suffer from hair loss, that doesn't make it any less stressful. Most commonly, hair loss is hereditary (androgenetic alopecia), affecting both men and women, yet there are several factors that can also contribute to hair loss such as an underlying medical condition or medication. Temporary hair loss resulting from stress, illness, childbirth or diet will usually resolve itself without intervention. Our dermatologists will determine the root cause of the hair loss as well as guide you toward a range of solutions that could help prevent further hair loss.
