Find out more about microdermabrasion:
Southern Dermatology is pleased to now offer microdermabrasion treatments, the treatment used to gently sand your skin to remove the thicker, uneven outer layer and reveal rejuvenated skin.
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the thicker, uneven outer layer of the skin and is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage and stretch marks.
- Improve age spots and blackheads
- Exfoliate your skin for a refreshed appearance
- Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
- Improve hyper-pigmentation
- Reduce or eliminate enlarged pores
- Thicken collagen for a more youthful appearance
Patients who undergo microdermabrasion will have no downtime or recovery period following the procedure. Results will be long-lasting, depending on the severity of prior skin damage and number of treatments received, but your provider may recommend a special moisturizer or facial product to prolong results.
Two Kinds of Microdermabrasion Procedures
There are two different types of microdermabrasion procedures you can receive. One procedure involves a hand-held device that streams tiny crystals across your skin while an attached vacuum suctions away the exfoliant and the dead or loosened skin. The second, and newer, approach takes a diamond-tip wand that is moved gently across the skin to exfoliate. Procedures can last around a half hour and patients may feel a slight scratching sensation as their skin is exfoliated.
FAQs About Microdermabrasion:
- WHEN IS MICRODERMABRASION USED?
Microdermabrasion was developed to improve scarring and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It is not effective in treating congenital skin defects, most moles, pigmented birthmarks or scars caused by burns.
- AM I A CANDIDATE FOR MICRODERMABRASION?
Unlike dermabrasion, people of all skin types and colors can receive microdermabrasion treatments. Microdermabrasion makes subtle changes and doesn’t cause skin color change or scarring.
- WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
Your skin will be pink and feel dry and tight like a slight sunburn or windburn for around 24 hours.
- WHAT IS AFTER-CARE LIKE?
You’ll want to use moisturizers and sunscreens. Avoid sun exposure for a few days immediately after the procedure.
- HOW ARE IN-OFFICE RESULTS DIFFERENT FROM AT-HOME TREATMENTS?
Devices used in-office generally have a larger motor and can penetrate deeper into the skin to provide precise exfoliation.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GO IN FOR TREATMENTS?
The number of treatments and frequency depends on your skin concerns. Your aesthetics provider will be able to help you develop a plan for your skin.
