Botox® is great for treating wrinkles and facial creases and has been one of the most trusted brands for facial rejuvenation. Forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity can all be treated with Botox® Cosmetics. Even lip lines, the chin and the corner of the mouth and neck can be treated with Botox®.
Botox® is the only approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet in adults.
How Does Botox® Work and What’s the Process Like?
Botox® blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles, meaning the injected muscles can’t contract. This makes the wrinkles relax and soften, and most patients will see results in three to seven days.
Wrinkles result from a combination of factors: cellular change over time, reduction in collagen, free radical damage, repeated movements of the underlying muscles and more. Botox® Cosmetics work beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes those lines.
The active ingredients in Botox® Cosmetics is a highly purified botulinum toxin protein derived from sources in nature. Formulations, potency and approved doses vary among botulinum toxin products so there’s no other Botox® on the market.
For the crow’s feet area, your dermatologist will inject three areas of the orbicularis oculi (the muscle to the side of the eye) to reduce the appearance of the lines. For frown lines, your dermatologist will administer five injections into the forehead muscles; one injection will be in the procerus muscle and four in the corrugator muscle.
For best results and to avoid any interactions, it’s best to avoid alcohol starting at least one week before the procedure and should stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before treatment to reduce bruising.
How Long Does Botox® Last?
Every patient is different, but typically we see the effects of Botox® lasting three to four months. Some patients even begin to see results 24 to 48 hours post-injection. As muscle action gradually returns, the wrinkles will begin to reappear and need to be treated again. However, the fine lines and wrinkles will appear less severe over time because the muscles will be trained to relax.
What are the Side Effects of Botox®?
The most common side effect of Botox® is temporary bruising around the injection site. Headaches, though rare, can happen but will typically end in 24 to 48 hours post-injection. An even smaller percentage can develop a drooping eye caused by the Botox® moving around. This side effect only lasts for about three weeks but can easily be prevented by not rubbing around the treated area for 12 hours or lying down for one hour after the procedure.
